Yep, my wife is deadly with her Mossberg 500 20 ga.

She doesn't care for any of my 12 ga. shotguns because of the recoil.

Also I was reading up on a 28ga too but know nothing of them.. Which is better for her?? She will be shooting some skeet upstate and maybe slugs here at the range.

A single shot shotgun will have more felt recoil then a pump or auto-loader. What loads are you using? Trap loads are lighter in recoil. Start her off light then work your way up. Also get her a vest with a pocket for gel pad. Browning makes some nice ones. My wife shoots a Benelli Ultra-Lite in 12 ga. Her turkey gun is a NEF single shot. It kicks like hell with 3 1/2 mag loads. She only tolerates it because if she see a turkey she only have to shoot it once. A youth model 870 in 20 ga should be ok. Don't rule out a 12 ga. They're sometimes heaver and have lighter recoil then some 20 ga.

Yeah she can't hold anyone of my guns for very long without saying her arms hurt so I figure the youth model would be best.. I think if I can get her to break just a few clay targets she will be hooked like I am now.. Of course not the the same extent but u get my drift lol gotta love when a cute girl can handle a shotgun!

There is 20 g and 20 g. Upland loads/ skeet and trap loads are relatively mild, but some of the 20 g magnum loads can kick the snot out of you.

28 g is scarce nowadays. Not only the guns, but you will not walk into a wallyworld or Dicks Sporting Goods and find a lot of cheap 28 g ammo.

.410 has less recoil- and is a lousy gun for a beginning shooter- it is MUCH harder to hit with. If you find someone on the trap range breaking birds with a .410, do NOT take him up on the offer of a friendly wager- the .410 is an expert's gun for wingshooting- size of the shot string is painfully small.

Try a youth model 870 WITH A GOOD RECOIL PAD. Limbsaver gets my vote for pads.

Remington sells 870s in 410. Good weight to offset recoil, easy to feed,

simple to use, and a very popular platform. All at a good price...

During 15 years as a police firearms instructor, I found many officers very sensitive to recoil, had a large problem with pump shotguns.

Officers that simply couldn't qualify with the 870 pump, would qualify the very first time with the 1100P gas operated semi-auto.

After trading my wife's 20 ga 870 for an 1100 police in 12 ga., she was able to go from light trap loads to heavy buckshot loads without pain.

870 trap and skeet guns are HEAVY! That helps with the recoil. But 870 defense/police shotguns are feather light, and the recoil is brutal. Even in 20 ga.

Get your GF an 1100 police in 20ga, and she'll be able to shoot the heaviest buckshot loads without pain.
