fn scar 17 or m14 socom

I'm ready to go high caliber and I am debating on these two different rifles. In yalls opinion which is the better built rifle? If someone has both which do you like and why? If you had a choice which would you go? As of now I'm leaning towards the socom but not quit sold. Help a fellow out

If it was me, I'd put my money on a SOCOM, but it's also because it fits my gun laws better. I'd be pinned to a five round mag, so that's all I would really buy. It would also help when hunting since I think you're only allowed up to five max, but that might be three. I'll have to ask some of the people I know who hunt.

Another reason I'd choose it is looks. I've always liked the way an M1A looks, no matter what it's wearing. It also seems like there would be more parts out for them if you're into modding your rifles is some way or another.

As far as the caliber goes, you're at a stale mate there. Only thing the SOCOM might give you is a little better velocity. You'd also probably have a better sighting system with it as well, although I'm almost thinking both rifles share the same style of irons.

Keep in mind, I've only ever shot the M1A and never so much as held a SCAR anything in my life. Haha

I'm actual leaning towards the m1a because it's longer and you'll get greater accuracy over distance

That's why I'd be leaning towards an M1A, but if you only really have 100-200 yards to shoot anyways it wouldn't make much of a difference. If you've got an unset maximum range, I'd defiantly get it.

ive had three m1a and have a scar17

i no longer have any of the m1a

i know lots of folks like the m1a but i find them ungainly very poorly balanced incredibly heavy not very ergonomicly friendly and very difficult to keep accurate over the long haul.

the m1 is very fun to shoot but a pain in the but to load a fresh mag since its got the ak style rocker lock type system for putting in a fresh mag.

the only thing i really liked about the m1 was the sight system its classic ww1/ww2 era vintage.

now the scar 17 is a wonder to shoot if the m1a was fun like girl next door type fun the scar17 is pure porn star fun. extremely accurate and remains so through the barrel lifespan. you dont have a oprod you have to worry about bending with hotter ammo or heavier bullets. it runs everything well from 150grain to 180grain loads. mags are the same price range and slightly more available than m1a mags.

scar17 you get a full monolithic reciever adjustable gas system very very good iron sights with an adjustable range setting on the rear sight that works. the trigger group is protected from dirt and debris even when running suppressed.

the only negative about the scar17 is the horrid triggers. there are two replacement style triggers you can get one from giesselle and one from timney. ive got the giesselle trigger as its more of a direct drop in place. replacing only a few parts.

my scar17 using match grade handloads is a submoa gun up to 300 yards which is as far as ive shot it.

this is a pic from sighting in with a 4x32 acog. using 168grain sierra smk. the top hole was the final adjustment and is a 3 shot group. the bottom two holes are single shots each in between adjustments to bring the optic up to final zero

between the M1a and scar17 its absolutely no contest.

scar17 weighs in at the same weight factor as most ar15...

very interesting, so over long distances which one do you think will be more accurate

scar17 hands down.

there is no good way to mount a scope reliably on a m1a. every scope mount out there for the m1a has issues of one sort or another.

then talking iron sights i think, after using both styles, the scar17 edges the m1a since it uses standard ar15 front sight posts. i put a match grade .040 post in mine. and if you dont like the scar stock sights you can replace them by using any number of standard picatinny style open sights.

the scar17 has just miles of rail space in a monolithic format for mounting whatever optic system you choose. thats a HUGE advantage. ive got my nightforce 12-42x56 benchrest scope on qd mounts from ADM and it works just awesome on the scar17

here is mine with a trijicon accupoint

I have a friend here in OK who is selling his SCAR 17. I'm an FFL so I can ship it to your FFL if you're interested.
