How do they justify selling twenty dollars worth of plastic for $359?

If the price were more in line for what is being sold, I would get one. Drop the 3 and that would still be too much.

Probably about the same way they justify selling a registered full auto for over 15 grand. There isn't any practical way you can use it for self defense; just a way to burn ammo real quick. Fun for a minute or two, then put it up for a year until you can get enough ammo to use it again. If you have a dedicated .22LR, it might not be such an expensive proposition. To put it in perspective, after you deal with an insurance salesman, he has about a month of your hard earned pay and you end up with about $.75 worth of paper.

I tried mine on a 22lr. It didn't produce enough recoil for it to work well. It was hard to achieve the bouncing action needed

You have to do some preparation to your AR to make the slide fire work with .22 ammo. First you have to get a really light trigger pull, probably about 3 1/2 lb break (milspec is about 7 1/2), then grease the buffer tube. There are a couple of youtube vids that give tutorials. .22 ammo is getting almost as expensive as .223, so I don't know if that is an option any more, at least for me.
