DefaultAR, AK, how about a third side to this old argument?

SA vz-58, 7.62x39mm, only thing in common with the AK is caliber, nothing else. Love to shoot it, light recoil, accurrate and fun. This one also sports the extended bolt release from Niet Arms, and after hits picture installed the extended amibextrous mag release from the same great guys. Also has US made gas piston and metal trigger, so all surplus mags are uasable, 922 compliant.

With rare 20 round mag, Zahal stock folding extended.

I always gotta be different!

orangello, with the extended ambi mag release, I can pop the mag loose, manipulate the safety and release the bolt with the trigger finger, all without changing my firing grip.

Very nice! Never seen or held a VZ but have read they are better than AKs in many ways. I bet if they used AK mags they would be much more popular.

The mag is different due to the BHO channel. Unlike the AK, the vz-58 will hold the bolt open last shot. With the completely open top, you don't get many brass related jams either.
BTW, mags are aluminum. Some were worried about that, but they are very strong, better than most if not all of the plastic mags I see nowadays. 30 round mags are avilable from Czechpoint for as little as $13 each.

That thing is really sweet. How about a range report and a more in depth review?

CZ357, ask and ye shall recieve....

I am NOT the worlds greatest shot, lets start off with that!
The vz-58, as it came from CZ-USA, fixed sporter stock, felt great then, too. Not too many months after this, CZ-USA and Czechpoint ended thier agreement, and the D-Technik/CSA vz-58 rifles are now only available from Czechpoint. A far cheaper version is available from Century Arms, but I have had bad experiances with CAI equipment and customer service.

Compare to WASR 10, full pound lighter when loaded. Milled reciever as opposed to stamped/folded. The worksmanship was light years abve the Century built Romak...

First shots fired, *ahem* a few years ago.
