Right now you could build a nice mil spec AR 5.56/.223 with MOE gear for about $550

Seems as the WASR 10 is about the same price

I prefer the AR. Although having plenty of 7.62X39 on hand might make it a hard decision.

Ya that's the main thing for me is do I get something I already have ammo for or go with the other that I like. That's the main reason the US military sticks with 3 main cartridges. 5.56, 7.62 NATO and 9mm. Easier for logistical purposes. Or in my case easier to buy.

Ive been in this spot plenty of times myself for me it really goes down to feel I had the choice between the ar or ak and I had to hold both of them and play with them. Long story short I ended up with an ak. Based on feel and price of ammo I would hold them both play with the controls and what not.

Also depends on point of use I got an ak for plinking and defense not really hunting but I could use it for that as well.

Okay I have the solution to your dilemma.

Rock river arms makes an AR that shoots 7.62x39 called the LAR 47. User friendly ergonomics of an AR/M16 fires the rounds you already own. Boom roasted FTW, you get both since you can't pick!

Not a bad idea. I'd love to get my hands on one just to play with for a day.

Get an AK. Sell the SKS and use the money for an Aimpoint Pro.

Get a quick-adjust two-point if you don't already have one.

Purchase Circle 10 magazines as funds permit.

I like accuracy over (supposedly better) durability. I'm 50 and don't think I'll be crawling through mud puddles any time soon

I'll take an AR any day. It's just way more accurate

Colt and S&W also make a 7.62X39 upper
I have a AR in 7.62X39 that I built , it shoots pretty tight groups even with steel cased ammo at 100 yards . Mags have been a reliability issues but after tweaking on the feed lips a tiny bit its been 100% non issue now . The 7.62 was not made to be a precision cartridge , it was made to be a hard hitting, man stopper cartridge under 300 meters. Remember the gun is only as accurate as the person pulling the trigger
