Thanks for the input so far! I am recently single and have no children. I've been in sales since I was 17 and God gave me a real talent for it so I've always had a healthy income stream. A lot of my friends always ask about my gun budget, it's just about discipline and making sacrifices elsewhere, like driving an older truck with no payment.

I'd like to be able to knock down a deer at long range if needed and punch paper at long range. Currently I'm only set up for engagements under 500 yards. I'd like to extend that a bit, hence the 700-800 yard range. I'd also like better barrier penetration and knock down power if needed, hence the 7.62 requirement.

I have not heard of the Sig 716, I'll have to check it out. I also didn't know about the weight and special parts in the HK. IMHO, $4,000 shouldn't come with those draw backs. So far, the SCAR 17S is my front runner, I just need to know more about the other platforms.

Jon, that SCAR looks really great! I just wish they took the .30cal PMags. Thanks everybody so far that has shared!

1911love, the SCAR does take PMAG's with a Handl Defense lower. What's an extra 3 bills (aluminum) to 5 bills (magnesium) compared to a 3K carbine? Add a $400 dollar Geissele trigger to that... sling, grip, optics... ka-ching, ka-ching, ka-ching.

I have to agree, Jon's SCAR is awesome. SureFire cans are awesome, too.

Making an 800 yard shot (consistently and accurately, not just tagging a 55 gallon drum) requires lots of ancillary equipment that doesn't come with a rifle or scope, like an anemometer, barometer, thermometer, IR thermometer (to measure the ammo temperature), ballistics charts, a level, a laser range finder, a decent spotting scope, and ammo that's around two bucks a pop.

Apart from that a quality scope that doesn't have the optical distortion you experience with cheaper ones at higher magnification levels is a must-have, not a nice-to-have.

Everyone likes the guns, which is the fun part for me too, but do you already have all of that? Because it'll easily run you what the rifle did and ammunition makes the cost of everything else seem trivial by way of comparison.

Also, what kind of deer are you hunting at 800 yards?

If you want penetration and stopping power, you probably want to up the caliber a little at that distance, which generally means a bolt gun although I've seen a .338 Lapua AR. It was a beast.

I ordered a handl lower when i got the scar17. It just 2 weeks ago showed up. Ordered from rainier arms.

The funny thing is 308pmags are non existant on shelves and ones off auction sites are more than the scar17 mags and scar17 mags are relatively easy to get atm. Heh.

Oh well. At least when magpul gets caught up i can use both. Im going to build out the handl lower so its just a push pin swapout to use both types of mags.

The LMT is the choice of the Royal Marines. Their MilSpec demands that it be capable of engaging man sized targets at 800 meters with M80 Ball ammo! It's their "standard" designated marksman and "short" sniper rifle.
Imagine what it will do with match grade ammo.

I would avoid anything with a "piston." No point in adding extra parts, extra weight and disturbing the excellent balance of the platform.

1911,

Might also look at the Rock River Arms LAR-08 Rifles. They also come standard with the 2 Stage National Match Trigger that RRA is noted for. I have a 16 inch Mid Length that will shoot 1 MOA Groups at 100 yards and their Varmint Rifles claims smaller groups. The 16 has been effective for deer hunting also.

Rock River Arms are the most accurate on AR 15 platform that I own. Which includes 2 Noveske's, LMT, POF, BCM and Colt. I do not think you would go wrong with one in 308.

I have the DPMS LR308-AP4, and love it. It's an accurate, rugged weapon.

But it's not in the same category as the LMT or the Knight's Armament SR-25.

LMT and Knight's are pretty much the "benchmark" for .308 AR platforms.

Check out Black Rain Ordanance. They have a web site, and there on facebook. There the ones thst gave Army Master Sgt C J Grisham one of there ARs after the Cops took his while he was doing a 10 mile hike with his 13 year old son. The hike was for a merit bag for the Boy Scouts. His Son video tape it while his dad was getting arrested. You can watch the video on YouTube. Black Rain builds AR based wepons for longrange / Sniper competitions. Maybe they could build you one in .338 Lapua. That would hit hard at a 1000 Yards!
