Not an important feature, but a silly restriction.

That's assuming there is not also a bullet button restriction for those as well.
There wasn't on my CA. I loved it! Great rifle, I'd suggest one to everybody.

Bullpup! MSAR Stg-556 or E4. Most Stgs take AUG mags, E4 takes AR mags. If you have some extra money check out the Tavor TAR or AUG-A3.

Why not go AK74?

If you trade caliber to 5.45, you're all set.

The 5.45was made to emulate the 5.56, anyway.

Thought the original post said under $1,000.

Otherwise there is a much larger range.

Sorry, must have missed that part about under $1000.

Actually, I reread and it was "doesn't cost a fortune". So it's all relative. Under $1k is my standard. YMMV.

If money were no object, Tavor all the way and all day.

I agree Java. I guess with the MSAR being ~$1800, the Tavor ~$2000, and the AUG north of $2000 that wouldn't be considered a budget buy.

If it didn't have to be a semi-auto, a Mossberg MVP would be pretty cool. Bolt action, takes AR mags.

See what you can get an Arsenal SLR-106FR for in your area and online. The ones I've seen run about 1K.

The Arsenal has a folding stock, a rail for a scope mount, and it uses 5.56MM.

Magazines are more difficult to obtain.

The 5.45MM AK has more going for it in terms of magazine and ammunition availability/affordability.

AR alternatives tend to be pretty expensive and heavy. Any particular reason why an AR will not do, or do you just want it to be different?

I would not get a bullpup of any sort, but that's just me.
