The other drawback with a Mini-14 are their accessories. During the "panic," 30rd mags were $125. Last show I attended, they were still $75. I've got a Mini, had it before my AR's and like it fine. But over all, it's more expensive to operate than an AR.

I watched a video on these, and I don't know if it was over played acting or what, but the recoil looked absolutely ridiculous on those. I'm talking an easy 10" muzzle jump the the video I watched. I don't get that much muzzle jump from a .30-06

Well whatever it was, it's the Beretta rifle I'm thinking of.

Daewoo DR 200 if you can find one. Half AR half AK. Uses AR mags.

Mini-14's are at least obtainable. I have not seen a Kel-Tec SU-16 of any kind, not even the crappy CA model, since last year.

Some rifles I've looked at.

AR-15 pattern. You can find them for well under $1,000 with all the bells and whistles. Dust cover, foward assist, etc. In my experience, AR-15 style rifles are generally accurate regardless of model, require more maintenance, but have the most flexibility and customization options.

There are AK pattern rifles in 5.56mm. You will have problems finding magazines as it is a niche. Accuracy may be all over the map. Somewhere between adequate to almost AR level depending on brand and build. You do have some decent customization options with an AK pattern and they are generally considered very reliable and low maintenance. (Like it matters, I clean everything)

The modern Ruger Mini-14 has actually fixed a lot of problems. Extremely reliable, maybe more than an AK and generally more accurate than an AK but I have a hard time believing they'll outshoot an AR. Don't believe the comments about magazines. They are easier to find. The rifles are hard to come by but if you want one wait. Don't pay over $1,000 for one, which I've seen. They should be in the $675 to $850 range depending on model.

The Kel-Tec SU-16 seems awesome and can use AR mags. They are the stuff of myth and legend. They are unicorns right now.

Saiga makes a 5.56mm rifle that is dirt cheap. I really think they need some additional work to get them up to the level of other rifles on this list. Sure, you may pay $400 street, but how much will it cost to make it competitive with everything else?

Century Arms offers an HK 93 clone. Quality varies so caveat emptor. Magazines may be difficult to come by but the rifle comes with 2 40 round magazines. Customization options are probably worse than anything else out there. Can be had for about $750 right now but they were under $700 pre-panic.

Those are all the ones I'm aware of that you can buy new. If you go used the options expand somewhat.

Not an AR fan myself, but I wouldn't discount it as a possibility. There are some decent models out there at a good price and I consider it a great "starter" gun if you're looking for a modern sporting rifle.

What's wrong with the Kel-Tec SU16-CA?

Wish I still had mine.

Thanks to California regulations you cannot fire the SU-16CA with the stock folded. It's designed to function like their SU-16A model even though it is constructed like a 'C', which can fire with the stock folded.

Not an important feature, but a silly restriction.

That's assuming there is not also a bullet button restriction for those as well.
