I like them both and while they are most certainly interchangeable for retuning fire to some extent, each has their own strong points as others have pointed out. The AK is a Pick axe while the AR is a precision double bladed axe, the first can be used on just about anything, the second is made to accurately split hairs but is a tad less reliable when it comes to mudbogs! Both have rounds available nearly anywhere, the AK has Some Stopping Power the AR cant provide but the AR is probably more ammo conservation ready due to its accuracy.

If you can, get one of each, both are lots of fun and neither is less lethal in trained hands!

A lot has been covered here, but keep this in mind: there are far more ammo choices for the AR than there is for the AK, and many 5.56 choices are far more effective than a lot of the 7.62 Soviet choices (due to better engineering).

As for the 870 comment... a good shoot is a good shoot. Doesn't matter if it was done with grandpa's duck gun or an evil black rifle.
