Well, this is a showdown for my wallet. I've been wanting an autoloader chambered in .308 Win but can't seem to make up my mind. I've seen Cetme's for $500-600, then on the upper really sweet M1A's for $1500-2000. Ptr-91's, FAL's, and Saigas have fallen in between. Now I've seen on the Springfield web site that the MSRP for the M1A I like (Standard model with blonde GI wood stock) is $1099, but all I've found were the same rifles for no less than $1200 elsewhere. I like the look of the Cetme and FAL out of any HK clone, but the Cetme is usually assmebled by Century Arms (-1 to them). Criteria for my ideal .308 are these:
1. Quality
2. Reliability
3. Accuracy
4. Sensitivity with mil surp ammo
5. Ergonomics
6. Bang for buck
I'd like to not spend too much over Springfield's MSRP... And am I able to buy directly from SA.com? Last edited by HawkI; 06-30-2010 at 04:12 AM.Reason: Misspell |

I'm biased, but the M1A gets my top vote.
FAL's are nice but the triggers and sights are lacking.
I went through my HK-91 phase in the 80's and no need to go back.
Saigas are great, especially for the money.
Valmet 76's (not 78's) are outstanding.
Look around for a late 80's vintage M1A with a high USGI parts count, or save up a bit and get an LRB if you decide the M1A/M14 is for you. __________________ NRA-Life

I went with other. My vote would have to go to the AR-10, namely the DPSM LR-308. Ive got the LR-308b (18" bull barrel), and love it. It's reliable after the first couple hundred round break-in period and dead accurate. There is another member here, who with handloads has gotten groups as small as .4 inches at 100 yards. And don't pay attention to the prices on the site, they can be had for under 1k.
They're definitely worth taking a look into.

I had a DSArms SA58 carbine. It was built like a tank and has an adjustable gas tube. I sold it to buy an M1A Scout Squad. There was no comparison. The M1A was an outstanding rifle. much nicer than the FAL. Better ergonomics, better sights, more accurate and it just felt better all the way around.
Guess which got my vote. __________________ Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) - a system of government where those least capable of leadership are elected by those least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to succeed or provide for themselves are rewarded with goods and services paid for by wealth confiscated from a diminishing number of people who actually work and produce.

As with M14'sRock and CA357 I cast my vote for the M1A. I've had the one thats up and running now since the early 90's. I just dont see how you can beat their iron sights. They're built like a brick shat house and take quite a beating with little to no ill adverse effects in reliability or accuracy. |

+1, dpms lr-308 __________________ I could make a list of a bunch of guns i have, or "have", or wish I had. Why would one feel compelled to provide that infornation freely? Do you feel the need to show off? Is it some immature game of oneupsmanship?
Why do you feel it necessary to list your guns? |

I have a Cetme and FAL right now I am waiting on saving enough money for a DPMS .308 or a Springfield M1A. As far as my Cetme is concerned I have never had a problem with it. It will eat what ever I feed it. My FAL is still waiting to go to the range since I do not have enough ammo for a good work out. |
