2 questions

What magazine does a Galil use? Is the Saiga .308 worth a damn and what do they use for mags? I realize that's 3 questions but I only used 2 question marks.

Galils use Galil Mags. The .308 can also use modified M14 mags. The .223 mags are not rare.

Saigas are excellent. I have one in 7.62x39 and love it. By far my favorite AK variant. I will be picking up one of the 16" .308's soon.

Nope. Valmet .223 mags can work, but they are spendy. Not sure if .223 AK mags will work.

Saiga 308

My 16" Saiga 308 is great. One suggestion if you intend to buy one, however, is to look at the front sight. It is pricey to modify the position of the front sight so make sure you get what you want. A muzzle break usually requires threading, so make sure its there if you intend to get a brake. There is also a bolt on brake but it requires 3/16" clearance between the sight post and the end of the barrel. Make sure its all there in what you buy because you may spend more making modifications than you paid for the weapon if not.

The reason why the brake is so important is that without it you tend to get a fireball upon trigger pull which distorts your sight picture and requires re-acquisition of the target every time you fire.

Have fun tricking it out. A forend, foregrip, pistol grip, piston, rails... there are so many after sale components available that you'll enjoy the heck out of it even before you take it to the range!

Mags

Saiga 308's come with two 8 round mags. This keeps it a "sport model". You have to add American made parts to make it 922R compliant in order to use hi cap mags. (Google 922R for explanations.) Saiga mags are EXPENSIVE and come in 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 rounds.
