Traditional Hawken

My favorite rifle of all is my .53 Hawken. It is one of several that I have built, this one from parts from Track of the Wolf. It is as correct as it was possible for me to make it. It has accounted for numerous critters and a couple of vermin.

These three stocks are 5/8 scale, and will get 38 cal barrels for my grandsons. The top is fancy walnut and will become a full stock Hawken, the center is curly ash and will become a Southern mountain rifle, and the bottom is curly maple and will become a half stock Vincent. And, I get to blood them all.

Are you going to put flash hiders and holo sights on them? Thank goodness it is not another AR thread! You kinda make me want to get back into black powder stuff.

W. C. Quantrill 06-22-2012 01:16 AM

Yes, authentic 1840 flash hiders and holo sights!!! ;)

These will be traditional musket, not modern musket.

These are surplus Winchester 38-55 barrels, and will go in those 5/8 stocks. It aint easy finding hardware small enough for these. They will get Manton locks as that is about the smallest I can lay hands on. Trigger guards will have to be made or cut down and butt plates will have to be made or cut down.

VERY nice, sir! My Hawken is much newer, and not as traditional (T/C .50) but it IS a tack driver, and a hoot to shoot! Found I could roll my own cartridges- J<>B Double Wider cigarette rolling papers.

Yes, I have not tried that yet, I just pour and ram. The TC is a good rifle, even though they call it a Hawken, it is actually a replica of a Tryon rifle. I am going to try it though.

The brass half stocks are direct descendants of the half stock Tryon Indian Trade rifle. This page is from the 1875 Tryon catalog and you could buy the rifle with double set triggers, and patchbox for $9.50.

While $9.50 might sound like a bargain, remember that $10 gold piece is now worth HOW MUCH?!? :p And thanx for the info on Tryon. Beautiful wood- have to ask- where are you finding that?

I started deer hunting with a ML before Pyrodex and pellets. But 5 rolled cartridges in a .22 ammo box is one pocket, tin of caps in another, I was good for a day's hunting. Cast my own maxi's- I scored 150 lbs of pure, butter soft lead for 50 cents at a Federal auction some time back. First time I hunted with them, got a 6 pt buck at just over 100 yds- moved about 10 ft, and dropped like a rock.

Doncha love the smell of sulfur in the morning !!!

Hmm, One of my old gun books,,,,I dont know if it is that Hawken book, by Baird, or one of them by Hanson. They address the origin of these late model guns. I have about every book that Track of the Wolf sold.

I have a traditions 50 cal hawken. Shoot 370gr Maxi balls and is a tack driver. Have a Lymen Great Planes Hunter 54 on order. It has a 32"barrel with a 1 in 32 twist. Should shoot sabos and mini balls or the Lymen Great Planes 54 Caliber maxi balls. Love the smoke, smell and dirty hands. When I load up the 50 with 90grains of trip 7 and a 370grain maxi she do buck just a tad. 100 grains is like a sideways mule. The bullet must hit like a freight train.

Badshot320 08-13-2012 09:20 PM

What do you mean by getting to "blood" them?

A Sharps 45/70 that can reach out to 1,000 yards is pricy.
