I picked this up last year and can't locate any ammo. I know this is a black powder firearm but I was thinking of loading for this as I do for my 1873 Trapdoor. The load for the trapdoor is 12 gr of Trail Boss under a 405 gr cast flat nose. The fellow that I got this from had some ammo made from cut down 50/70 Bell cases with a 400 gr round nose bullet. This carbine is in very good condition. I believe this is was made in the 1860s. Could any one have an Idea where I could get 50/45 cases and cast bullets. I have some 50/70 brass but would not want to go to the trouble of cutting the cases to 50/45 specs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best regards Dick

Nice. Mine has a burnt forearm and was sporterized to a carbine from a NY State rifle (the hammer falls to half cock when pointed down and you close the breech).

Due to the extreme age of this round, AND the VERY limited run of guns in that caliber, the odds of finding factory brass in that length probably rates comparable to my friend Aaron Goldberg being picked as Pope.

BELL has made a business out of selling brass that could be adapted to feed orphan guns- and I think that is going to be your route. Trail Boss has a good rep for low pressures, NOT being position sensitive, and may be a good choice. I know that the 40-65 and 45-70 have load data of a 400 or 405 gr bullet over 11-12 grains of Tail Boss, running about 890 and 970 fps respectively.

They have 'em -- at about $3.25 loaded round. Think of it as buying the brass and get the dies maybe. There are others who do them too...

Thanks Hockalouis I have access to a set of 50/70 dies. Should work for 50/45? I've got some 50/70 brass. Cutting them down is a pain in the a$$ but at $3.25 a rd. I guess I'll have to go that route. I'll let you folks know how it turns out. Best regards Dick

That looks like a U.S. Navy Mdl. 1867 Remington SRC Carbine. The caliber 50-45 was later changed to the 50-70. The Navy 1867 was the first Remington RB ordered by the U.S. following the Civil War. Have you checked to see this is not a rework? I would follow up to see if it is the very rare Remington Navy 1867 Mdl. SRC Cadet 50-45
