Default Pietta 1858 New Army pistol

Hey guys, dad said I get to pick a gun for my birthday, so I found my favorite gun, a replica of the Remington 1858 NA .44cal, made by Pietta, how many of you guys have one and what do you like/dislike about it? I may later on down the road, have dad buy the .45 Long Colt conversion cylinder from Midway USA.

I don't dislike anything about mine. Shoots reliably, very accurate, fun to shoot, easy to load.

Happy Birthday Big Blue. I have the one with the long barrel, 12" I think. I put my first 5 rounds in my hunting buddy's 10" frying pan at 30'. Don't cook my eggs in a worn out 1980's teflon coated frying pan! Read up on how to protect yourself on chain fires. Do not over charge it. Wear glasses, mine will spit pieces of the cap back in your face. Hearing protection?, although I don't think they are all that loud. When carrying/hunting just put 5 in, keep the hammer down on an empty chamber. It is not advisable to get the 45 LC cylinder if your gun has the brass frame, like mine. There is a lot of good info in the Lyman Black Powder Handbook And Loading Manual. I also got the cylinder loading stand for mine and like it. Good luck, enjoy, be careful.

Also, take it apart and clean it, lubricate it with non petroleum product, and remove the nipples. Always put anti-sieze on nipple threads. Repeat this every time you clean your BP. Stuck nipples suck big time!

I have 2 of 'em. They are a lot of fun. I also use .454 ball. I use the felt wads over the powder to prevent chainfires. I use about 28 grains of Pyrodex P. Good luck!!

They are a blast to shoot. I have the brass frame also and you do not want the 45LC for that one, steel frame only. Like the others said be sure to give it a thorough cleaning after each outing. I use the Traditions Wonderlube to cover the cylinders my buddy uses Crisco, but I just cant do that, but then he has never had a problem with it. Anyway enjoy it I know you will.

The pistol is a good strong shooter. It is comparable to the .45 Colt with 35 grains of 3F.

Are any of you making your own holsters?

Hey there Quigley, I'm back!!

I ordered my holster from the Sportsmans Guide, I think I paid about $30 for the holster I already had the belt for it.
