A #11 nipple measures .15 inches at the top and tappers to .165 at the base. Some of the old larger cal muzzle loaders used musket caps which are much larger then #11. If it is a musket nipple, I would think you could remove it and measure the threads and just order a #11 that would screw right in. #11's are easier to find and cheaper then musket caps. Just my nickle minus 3, and note how well I refrained and kept on topic.

The "Top Hat" musket cap conversion used a standard #11 wrench. I think the OP has a 409 wrench.

Possibly a 209 wrench- for the setup that uses shotshell primers.
Typically most standard cap nipples were #10 or #11, and most wrenches would interchange. Musket caps were significantly larger, and 209 primers used on modern (usually inline) muzzleloaders.
What is your rifle, and posting a photo of the lock area would help.

I don't think the nipple size matters that much. It's the size of what the nipples are on that I care about.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

With a drum you should be able to just use a open end wrench or a small adjustable wrench. That's all I used for years until I ended up with a couple nipple wrenches (that does sound kinky doesn't it?).

wrench the wrong size! does this work? :)
I realize you guys are having fun at my expense and that is OK if someone would actually give me some help. Being a novice to BP and from what I have read most precussion come fitted with #11 nipple. However, it must not be the case for me. The wrench I purchased will in no way fit the nipple on my rifle. It is much too small. Again I respectfully ask, where is it measured? On the round part that the cap goes on or the part that the wrench fits on??
thanks guys for your assistance!
