Default Naming our firearms

i have been reading Muzzle Loader magazine for a while. It contains as much and more history than I've found elsewhere on My Ancestors corner of the world of VA, Tn Ky and VA.
A really well put together tome.
Wm Whitley 1749 VA had a rifle he named Nancy.
In those days a rifle was a reflection of who carried it and anyone that could had a well maintained and unique specimen.
His powder horn is elaborate and engraved with "Mr Whitley I am your powder horn, the Truth I love, A lie I scorn, Fill me with your best powder Ile make your rifle crack the louder See how the dead terrifick ball Make Indians bleed and Torries fall You with powder Ile supply For to defend your Liberty.
This verse tells us why the Second Amendment is the most important Amendment.
To protect our Liberty and it, shall not be infringed, is laid clear in our Constitution.
How is it that one, of us, would not defend it?
What name have you blessed your companion with, that is to defend our Liberty?

Naming ur guns? Preposterous! Why, I was at the range this week with my Enfield and my Mauser. So I was talking with Berty and Manfred, and they agreed that was silly. And I just asked Ivan and Eddystone, and they agreed.

But with Ivan's accent, it is hard to tell. Hans Peter, the K-31, says he already HAS a name- it is on a slip of paper under his buttplate.

My boy names his guns and they are usually very unique and true to the country of origin. Wasn't Boones long gun named "Tick Licker" or something like that.

The most common name I apply to my firearms is "My Newest One"
It is my hope that it bears the name, but for a short time.....

Daniel Boone was a Market hunter. One Season he and his skinners sold over 5,000 deer hides. "lots of Bucks". He wore out soft rifle barrels very quickly. He was fined by the Indians for trespassing many times. The Indians always fined him by taking his rifle. Boone owned many rifles. I expect he never named a rifle and being a Quaker he never wore a coon skin cap.
The old West Cowboys never named a horse. The philosophy of the day was never name anything you may have to eat. That may also apply today.

As a kid I called my rifle, my rifle. Only had one gun and it was constant companion, when, in the country. Should have named her.
