Keyholing?

Recently I obtained a .50 caliber mini-ball mold. After shooting about 15 of them today I realized about 4-5 of them had keyholed and strayed a bit from the main group. My question is what should I do to fix this,I was shooting them with 60 grains of growex (no idea how to spell that) out of my knight muzzleloader.

You MAY have a rifle that does not have the correct rate of twist for maxis, and the bullets are not stabilizing. Please advise WHAT rifle (make and model) rate of twist if you know it- and what you are using for bullet lube. We have some die hard muzzle loader folks around here (I know my limits) and they may be able to offer some advice.

GOEX...its typically in black letters on the red can... ;)

Measure the bullets, and slug your barrel.

The bullets are 320 grains and lubed. The rifle has no model number on it. Could it be that the bullets are moving to slow?

my first guess is the bullets are the wrong size. second guess is wrong rifling twist(like c3 said). third is barrel is a piece of crap.

I am guessing that because it is a Knight it is a modern design inline and will probably have a fast rate of twist and may not be able to handle the maxi. If it was me, I would try to bump up the powder charge a little and see if that allows the rifling to engage better. I have had bullets that would not work in a particular gun no matter what I did.

Try increasing your load to 70 grains. That might pull it in.

Might not be expanding the bullet enough to grip the rifling with the smaller powder charge?
