If you want a better grip on the actual price of something then and now, figure out how many hours you worked to get it- then and now. When my lady and I first married, we looked at buying a small house. It was about 4.5 years of my take home pay as a cop. Today that house still sells for- about 4.5 years of wages for a cop.
