identify civil war period pistol, not colt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have just purchased a pistol that I can not find any info on. It looks to be a 31 caliber, the barrel is 5 3/4" long and is octagonal. It has a five shot cylinder and it is a black-powder. It looks a lot like the colt but unfortunately it's not. The markings on it are not legible enough for me to make out but someone that knows these old guns could probably put 2 and 2 together and come up with something. The top of the barrel is marked "FIRST ????? PISTOL MANUFACTURE" and there is an arrow(with feathers) on the end of the barrel ( I hope not to tell someone which way to point it). The markings on the side of the barrel are harder to make out, on one side you can just see the bottom part of the letters and it is hard to get a picture to show them. There are some markings on the cylinder, one is an oval with a somewhat of a crown on top with the letters ELG inside of it. This oval is fvery similiar to the flaming bomb on modern US military items, it's not the same but just reminds me of that shape. Also there is what looks like 3A with a star over it. There are other markings.

Having image problems with the computer I'm using at the moment, but the oval with ELG is a Belgian Govt proof mark. That is, your pistol was made in Belgium, and proof tested there.

c3shooter, your not having image problems, I messed up with the pictures. I have some new ones coming, just waiting for them to go through the moderator I guess. Stay tuned as I would like to get all the info I can on this gun. It is rough but still a cool looking gun. I would like to get an idea of value to if anyone wants to chime in with an educated guess or better.

When newbies post pictures, a moderator needs to come along and approve the posts. It prevents spammers from posting porn pictures on the board, but it can be a pain sometimes. PM me if it happens again and I'll approve them.
