Sounds like you need to start planting some rye grass to draw more jaywalkers in. :)

your leaving it loaded??

you do realize that blackpowder has salt as one of its main components.

it will eat out the base of the barrel over time. if its not got a removeable breech plug that practice can eat away the threads undetected until it kabooms in your face!!

That was the first thing that I thought when I read this post.

Pyrodex? That's what I can get around here. Is it easier on the metal?

It is highly unlikely that leaving the rifle loaded will hurt anything. It would take a very long time for B/P or Synthetics to damage 4140 gun steel.
It would be wise to unload and prepare the rifle for storage. :)

That's not true unless it was fired first. I found an original 1858 Remington in an old barn once. All six chambers were loaded. The gun was in rough shape with deep pits in the metal from exposure. When I pulled the balls the chambers looked like new and the powder was still good.

Before it was loaded last it was cleaned had a cap fired through it, then loaded & never fired !....................
