Which do you think was more effective on the battlefield.

That's a darn good answer, and if it were only buckshot I might fully agree Buckeye, but with a ball... Take it out to 50 yards; then Minie.

Being b&b is a smoothbore load, would it have loaded a little faster?

Compared to "ball and patch", for, say, a Kentucky or Pennsylvania rifle, B&B is MUCH faster. However, the minie is smaller than bore diameter, is expanded on firing- they can load pretty quickly.
