A muzzle loader uses PURE, butter soft lead. I also cast bullets for .357 and 9mm, using wheelweights as my basic metal.
Not a difficult process, saves a buncha money for reloaders, quite safe as long as you follow the 3 rules- read the book first, follow the directions, and do not try to mooch my source of wheelweights (3 local tire shops swap me a bucket of weights for a 6 pack of Miller) Find a copy of the Cast Bullet Handbook.
PS- I scored 150 lbs of pure lead foil at a govt surplus auction a few years back- for 50 cents. Have enuff to feed my muzzleloaders until I am 99. Will have to get more then.

I'm a little curious. I have a 50 cal Thompson. It is a cap and ball type. I have never fired it. It was a gift. I already pour lead for modern cartridges. I currently have 7 different molds for assorted calibers and weights. Many have to be sized and lubed before loading. How does one address that issue with a round ball? Or is it not an issue? I mean a cylindrical shaped bullet is easy to tell which way to put in the case after sized. How do you tell which way the ball was sitting when sized ? Or is sizing not needed at all? |

not sized, patched.
i pour my own round balls, drop them from the mold into the coffee can of water. when your done, just dump out the water and spread them out on a towel to dry and your done. |

Deth got it. Load round ball with the sprue UP, and they are a squeeze fit with the patch. I do not size maxis- mine are REAL- rifling engraved at loading. They are sized by pushing them down the bore- there are raised bands on the bullet that the rifling cuts into- not the smooth body of a smokeless bullet. __________________ What we have heah is.... failure to communicate. |

It was also quite accurate as well, surprised me.__________________ "A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercise. I advise the gun. You are shooting BP through a centerfire pistol? 1) why? and 2) how?
And at an indoor range? __________________ From C3Shooter:

If it were my range you would be out in a heart beat and not allowed to come back. Why? I do it cuz it's fun. Do it in rifles too and you haven't lived till you've fired bp thru a 1911.
How? Just fill the case to 1/16 of being full, seat a bullet, load her up and let her go.
Never at an indoor range tho. Heck I've never been to a range except for CAS matches. |
