I have a metal can of DuPont Superfine FFFG Gunpowder (Black Powder) that is in the old Red Metal Flask like can. It is a Red metal painted can with DuPont label Wilmington Delaware on the label and has a metal screw off cap on it. I have had it for probably 40 years without opening it. Is it safe to open as it is or should I take some other precaution. This question in concern for if I attempt to unscrew the metal cap could I generate a spark or static problem? I believe the can is possible a collectors piece but want to remove the powder. And if the powder is good I will use it in my 44Cal. New Army Pistol.

Even though there is no visible corrosion showing around the cap. I was just concerned if there was underneath if it would cause a problem. Thought about putting some Breakfree or light oil around the cap with the can upside down for just a minute to eliminate any friction that might be caused should there be any corrosion in the cap area and the can threads. The of course dry it off as soon as the cap was opened.

Believe it or not, the metal can PROTECTS from static. It is a conductor. However, many plastics and glass can CREATE static. Powder should be fine. If you have 4f that is priming powder for a flinter. Dupont has been totally out of the explosives field for a LOOOONG time.

Yep, ask the folks in Bohpal, India what they are into...wait, is there anyone left there? Nevermind. Ask the folks in the Mid-Ohio Valley about the C-8...ok...nevermind there as well. At least they have Kevlar...

The powder should be just fine and open the can without reservation. DuPont does have a great track record. Didn't the heir kill an Olympic wrestler or two? Seriously, empty the can into another metal or glass container and then call some antiquers about the can. Worth more than the powder these days.

Find it rather ironic- that the initials for I. E. DuPont are IED.........
