The walker is a horse pistol! It takes a bit getting use to but the repro's retained the original flaws: loading lever always drops (no keeper) after firing a round, caps often blow off due to recoil blast and jam cylinder rotation.

The 3rd model dragoon was supposed to correct this from what I have read.

Yeah I've been watching the price slowly creep up on the 1858 remingtons so when cabelas had them on sale, with a checkered grips to boot, I ordered one. Same with the GPR, I always wanted one. Finally said , screw it I'm not gettin any younger and ordered one ..........markerdown

Black powder is about all I shoot anymore.

I went to the range today to shoot my friend's new .54 cal flintlock (Pedersoli/Cabellas Blue Ridge), it is definately on my have to have list. I also shot my Pedersoli .54 Rocky Mountain Hawken. Great fun.

I just ordered my .44 LaPage muzzleloading dueling pistol today.

I have, and regularly shoot, my (Uberti) Walker-Colt - Literally a BLAST at 50 grains of 3Fg!

Markerdown - the loading lever seldom drops with a 50 grain load. It certainly will at a full 60 grains! Agree with you on the spent caps - they can jam up the cylinder. But the Walker-Colt has a great Texas history connection.

I also shoot BP Cartridges in my (Pedersoli) Sharps 1874 replica and my (Uberti) Model P .45 Long Colt.

I've had caps jam the action of just about every revolver I own. A way to stop that is to pinch them slightly before placing them on the nipples.

You won't need to pinch them with good fitting caps. Might need to change the nipples. One way to help keep from getting cap jams with Colt style revolvers is to raise the muzzle slightly and tilt it a tad to the right as you cock it. You still get one hung up in the safety slot in the hammer once in awhile but if you don't use the safety you can fill the notch in with silicone.

Yeah, I tried pinching the caps it worked on my others but not on the walker. Don't get me wrong, it's my favorite bp revolver. I'm shooting 55gr of 3F, I'll try dropping down to 50gr and see what happens. I don't recall the mfg of mine, I bought it back in 1980. It has the case hardend frame. Someone was telling me of a mod to grind the load lever spring to keep the lever up during firing. I have to do some more research on that.

I had a POS el cheapo import brass frame .36 1851 navy. IMHO that one pointed the best compared to the walker and 1860 army. But it was junk, not even fit to be a wall hanger after several outings.

I'm lookin seriously at the uberti 3rd model dragoon for my next purchase. ..............markerdown

It's strange that Colt never put a holder under the barrel for the Walker loading lever. If memory serves me correctly it is kinda pointy on the end and just hangs out in mid air.
Use a rubber band...
I had a Western Arms 5" .44 Sheriffs revolver that was brass framed. It shot out of timing and when I went to manually index the cylinder to the next loaded chamber it went off and caused a chain fire - apparently a cap had fallen off and lodged between the frame and the cylinder and discharged when I rotated it. A .454 ball ripped past my thumb and I drove 20 miles to the nearest emergency room thinking the ball was still inside my thumb ( thumb swelled to twice the size, was covered in powder residue, and was bleeding like a sieve). Naturally they called the cops since it was a "shooting" accident. When I got the gun back from the Sheriff's dept. after two weeks, I drove to the nearest bridge and dropped it over the side - now it sleeps with the fish... The Remington styled brass frames aren't too bad, but the open-top Colt's stretch over time.

My new BP toy arrived today. I'll be out of town this week-end, so I won't get to shoot it until next week. Pedersoli repica 1830-40's LePage 44 cal dueling pistol.

They do have a catch, it's just at the opposite end and poorly designed.

Either is fine with proper loads. Over load either one in a brass frame and there's going to be problems.

I've never seen a Walker replica up close so I can't visualize how the catch can be on the opposite end of the loading arm.

After the experience I had with my brass framed Sheriff's Colt, I'll never own another. So far the Spiller and Burr has held up nicely over 25 years, but it is not an open top Colt design either.
