Yeah definitely cheap fun! I think mine cost $30 new in 1971 with a little Marlin 4x scope. It's actually the Glenfield version and I got it at Globe Shopping City, Mesa, AZ. Got the 336C there too for about $90 with cheap scope. I usually shot iron sights but both scopes did work ok and held zero. Crappy optics of course but hey, if it's free it's for me!
It would be fun to play around with the 795 and I think the barrel is a few inches shorter than my old 60.
The biggest issue with assembling an AR isn't so much getting the parts together right - it's getting the right parts together.
