I'm sorry but if it's not legal to hunt deer with a 22mag, I cannot support it at all. That type of discussion has no place here as it does not support responsible gun ownership which what this forum is about. I imagine these statements could win you a visit from a friendly game officer as well.
If you've got a family member or friend who is recoil shy, get them the smallest legal round for your state. Here in NC you can legally hunt with a 223 which is a very light recoilling round or even better would be a 243 which is still recoil friendly.

It's not legal in most (if not every) State in the USA to use rimfires for deer.

That's not to say it hasn't been done...jacklighters have been using 'em for nighttime illicit hunting since they came out.

On the other hand, if the Anti-gunners get their way, we will be stuck with Rimfire Only
just like the UK...and our critters are WAY BIGGER than anything you will find in England.
And try to do-in a Feral Hog with a .22WMR...well, let's say you better make a VERY precise shot.
Forget dealing with Bear or Wolves with a .22WMR...they're just gonna stick the gun up yer wazoo.
Granted a little old lady used a .22lr on a bear, and got a once-in-a-lifetime-shot off and dropped the big bruin.
But I'd hate to bet my life on a rimfire. Even one with 30-round mags like the Keltec PMR-30,
or the Grendel P-30, P-31, R-31's...I'd use 'em as backups, but for a primary I've got a 10mm

DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE MAGNUM..............for anything! a .22 magnum is the rifle of choice for most hog hunters around these parts. i mean, they do use their big rifles while sitting on deer stands, but IF THEY'RE HOG HUNTIN', then most choose a .22 mag!

the 22 magnum will probably never be obsolete, frankly the 17hmr will never be as capable as the 22 magnum. the 17hmr is a very good, accurate rimfire that is way more suited for paper targets. the 22 magnum is a better hunting round so way more useful. now with that said, i do own a Savage M93r17 that i bought to rimfire target shoot with, had i wanted the rifle for small game hunting, i would have bought it in 22 magnum.

I fully agree the .17 is a great mouse gun.

Give it some credit - it's a great Rat Caliber! Be great for crows too - they learn to stay just out of .22LR range - surprise them with the increased reach of the .17HMR!
As Varmint Al calls it - the "Red Mist"!
But truthfully, since I started handloading the .22Hornet, I just hardly ever shoot my .17HMR or .22WMR rifles anymore. I can load the Hornet to do anything they can do a lot more cost effectively.
I do still shoot the .22WMR in a handgun.
