If you don't want to alarm the neighbors and the critters are getting restless, a 22 short in a rifle barrel is as quiet as a a civilian can get.

Bad idea. Several reasons. 1) bullet sizes are different which can screw up riflings 2) the brass swells or explodes in chamber 3) the difference in case length can cause the bullet to hit the throat of the barrel causing the bullet to tumble/get lodged smashed in the barrel jacking up riflings 4) the casings are different diameters and this includes the rims.

It is only a bad idea if your gun is not made to handle them. Several manufacturers make rifle that will take 22 short, long and long rifle.

No one said that, you're ASSUMING Gonzilla is stupid enough to try and fire 22 short through a rifle chambered in 22 magnum. Clearly Foe_Hammer is referring to rifles designed for 22 short, long and long rifle given the fact he posted the quote below.

Foe_Hammer, they're referring to rifles/handguns chambered in 22-mag, in which case they're right. However Gonzilla never said anything about shooting 22 short through a rifle chambered for 22Mag, he just said 22 short through a rifle barrel. Some assumed he was referring to the 22-magnum rifles because it's in the title of the thread. Instead of asking Gonzilla for clarification they decided to be a couple of smart-***es to both of you based on this assumption.

You and I chose to give Gonzilla the benefit of the doubt and assumed he was referring to rifles designed for 22 short, long and long rifle.

Yes, you area right - I own a copy of Winchester's excellent pump which shoots shorts, longs and LR. With low velocity ammo, the falling hammer strike is louder than the report of the round.

Previous guy or so had never shot a short in his life. Just wanted him to know they are or can be very useful to dispatch even large raccoons at close range.

Mea Culpa for any confusion.
