Up close-50 yards say it isnt. It gets that rep at ranges 100 yards out to about 150 yards.

if you truely want to find a rimfire that is TOTALLY unimpressive try the old .32 rimfire. i have a marlin that shhots both the rimfire .32 as well aws its centerfire counterpart and you could catch the bullet at 50 yards in your hand with a baseball catchers glove. truely a very underpowered round. i have no idea what this round was designed for but it sure would be hard to take any game with it.

have you seen the new hornady .17 Hornet? simply a .22 Hornet necked down to .17. ruger will be bringing a rifle out sometime this your (2012). since i collect the ruger 77/xx series its a must buy for me. as far as the discussion on the .17hmr vs the .22 mag they are both fun guns and the .22 mag seems to not destroy as much pelt or meat. I use my .17hmr on crows out to about 150 yards. it works fine. I use my .22 mag on crows out to about 150 yards and guess what it works fine too.

Do you own a 17HMR "target gun"? I would expect a "target gun" to shoot small groups, a production rifle probably won't shoot as tight even if it's chambered in a more accurate round (like 17HMR). Target grade ammunition will also help your "target gun" achieve a tighter group. Have any of your 22's shot .059" at 100 yards?

there are some guys taking savage M93r17 rifled actions and putting them into custom stocks and glassbedding them and doing trigger jobs and putting massive scopes on them and shooting very, very small groups at 200 yrds.

the 17hmr is more for target shooting and the 22 mag is more for hunting, IMO.

my savage M93r17 has a synthetic stock, trigger job and a 6-18x42 scope on it. it is very accurate if there is no wind! if there is any wind, i cant hit the broad side of a barn with it.

There were some early ones that had problems with improper feeding of the round and premature ignition of the primer and charge. My oldest nephew had one of these, shooting the recommended round. He called the Kel-Tec folks and they paid for shipping to and from the factory and returned a brand new pistol to him. Nary a problem since then.

Makes me wonder why they chose to halt production on the PM30.

I know there are fans of the 17 that would use it on Cape Buffalo, but I'm not that brave. The 22mag rocks, and I'd like to see a revival of interest here. Maybe when Kel Tec brings out the 22 mag rifle companion to their 30 rd pistol. Could be interesting.
