What's your thoughts on the future of the .22 mag?

With the .22lr as the American sweetheart round and the .17HMR as the new kid on the block with faster speeds and longer yardage what do you think the future looks like for the .22mag? Just curious...

In MY opinion, the .22WMR is more useful and versatile than the .17HMR-especially for bigger stuff. I don't see it going away any time soon. I currently own 3 .22mags.

i like the .22mag esp. for varmit removal. watch my great grandmother shoot the head off of a bird because it was activly eating her koi fish... having said that my dad has a really nice henry lever action .17. love that gun as well.

22mag is more useful in my opinion. the 17 sacrifices diameter and weight for flatter shooting. its a dubious trade at best.

Had both the 17hmr is no replacment for the 22wmr.

I agree with stalkingbear on this one.

I will be buying a 22 mag rifle rather than the 17hmr. There are new rounds available with better bullets. While it may not shoot as flat, it has heavier bullets and I prefer heavier.

yes to the 22WRM

I guess I'm old school and prefer what has worked well for me in small game hunting situations. I feel the .17 bullet is just too light for anything bigger than a ground squirrel. I know people can give all sort of examples of the .17HRM ability to kill effectively it's just what I feel in my gut. I was talking to a kid at the gun store wanted the .17 to take long shots at coyotes. I advised him strongly to go with a .223. I have a couple of 22 mag rifles and feel confident that they will hit pretty hard to about 100 yards. CD

the 17HMR and 17 MII are pretty nifty rounds but I don't see either doing anything to the 22WMR. I have a 17HMR and 22 mag. There are just too many tihngs the 22 will get done that the 17 wont. Especially if conditions are not the best and the critter is not pretty small.

I like the 17HMR, it's a fun round to use. But it's not better than the 22WMR.

Nah it aint goin nowheres. The .22 mag will still be around when the .17 is a distant memory
