If you are new to firearms, I would suggest the Savage single shot.
It has the best iron sights I've seen on a single shot .22 and a great trigger pull. The last time I priced one, they ran around $200.00 (Cabelas).

Sssssh, don't tell anyone, but there's no need to get all crazy expensive with a .22 . . .

It looks like the latest Marlin bolt-action is the Model XT-22. I've been very happy with my Marlin 25N.

Ruger 10/22 -- Get one for about $200 and upgrade a few parts for a total of $300 and it's it hands down the best little .22 you can have. Accurate, cheap, fun as hell and easily upgradable like an AR is -- how can you go wrong?

It's perfectly fine stock, and would still be the best .22 rifle around, but the 1 part that sucks are the sights -- replace them or put a scope on it.

And once you get your rifle, go do an Appleseed shoot

All rifles mentioned are really fine firearms My preference however is the Marlin 60..

1-The rifle has slimmer profile than the Ruger 10-22

2 I feel the Marlin 60 is more accurate out the Box than all others.

3-I do not like the magazines hanging down

4-I have 2 10-22's for sale any one interested

5- I have a difficult time spending 250.00 on a Ruger and then spending 2-3 hundred dollars on it to make it as accurate as a Marlin 60

+1 on the Ruger 10/22. Great quality, TONS of aftermarket stuff available and several different models to choose from. IMO you can't go wrong, it's a great platform to start and a reliable firearm.
