I own a pair of 22 mag derringers -(whole lotta fun n the fireball is memorable) yet mags are pricey. I have long debated trying a 22lr - never actually went through w it for most of the reasons already stated. But what is the worst case scenario?

The 22 LR is not the same diameter and the case may rupture. The ruptured case will spill hot gases out of the breech which can burn exposed flesh and the bullet may wobble down the barrel possibly causing excessive leading.

Did the Derringer design team anticipate someone doing this ? Is the breech lock up capable of withstanding the pressure of a ruptured case or will it blow up? How much faith do I have in the Engineering ? The quality of the steel ? Quality control on a gun which sold for $79 in the late 80's ??? This is not an HK ie an over engineered, weapon's platform.

Thankfully, I was never foolish enough to put it to the test. Murphy's Law still reigns supreme.

My thoughts on the matter is this; someone bothered to do some additional engineering at some point to come up with a unique cartridge. New specs, new brass, new name. If none of that meant anything, why not just buy random ammo for your gun, as long as it fits, (and if it doesn't, use a hammer), and hope for the best. On my way to the range, I'll stop and put some diesel in my gas truck, get some money from the ATM with my driver's license, drive on the LH side of the road, and park at the range behind the backstop........

Did the extracted round look like this?

A coworker was shooting his .17 HMR with several firearms noobs (himself included) & left for a moment. Someone dropped a .22 LR round into the chamber of the bolt action & fired it. Luckily, no one was injured.

He gave me the rifle, which he had recently won in a raffle for free. I poured some cleaning solvent down the muzzle end of the barrel & let it set upright over night. The round tapped right out, easier than I had expected.
Nothing was damaged as far as I could tell.

The projectile on the left is an unfired CCI Mini Mag that I pulled for comparison.

Don't do this at home.

Too late...looks like some hackers took your ATM idea to heart and stole a ton of cash. Approx $45M ~

If you have any other ideas on how to generate income - please PM me before you put it in the open.

Thank You !

I have a naive question: Is it ok to shoot .22 shorts in a .22 lr revolver, or will it cause problems.?

You can shoot 22WRF's in a 22 Mag. You can also shoot 22 short or longs in a 22 long rifle revolver, just clean the cylinder with a wire brush to remove the carbon ring left in it.

22WRF in a 22 mag is like .38 spl in a .357mag.

No problem - I use it for pest control. Hard to find gallery shorts anymore but way back in the day, shooting galleries actually had real firearms and ammo.

Only issue I can foresee is auto pistols will be reduced to single shots. (LR mags will not normally hold shorts and powder charge is inadequate to cycle action.)
