I want something that's going to be accurate and reliable. I like how the 597 automatically ejects the magazine for you and I like the look of the 597 and 597 vtr better than the ruger. Are they mire accurate than the 10/22? I plan on using whatever gun I get for squirrel and rabit hunting.

Either a rugar 1022 or a savage mark II both are awsome little rifles

I didn't mean to start the age old cartridge debate. Bottom line: Beast said there is a Ruger Sr9 in the house, so a .22 would be only a back-up. And yes if you can be calm in that situation a .22 is VERY lethal.

I would get the SKS. But they require more maintenance and cleaning after a day on the range.

Get the .22! If you want to be able to shoot more and not break the bank you need the .22. Especially since its your first gun.

I bought one of the original Remington 597s and I wasn't pleased with it. When they announced the recalls on it I was so happy. I thought "maybe now I'll have a rifle I actually want." Still wasn't the case. I have a Ruger 10/22 and S&W M&P 15-22 for my rimfire rifles and those are the only ones I recommend from what I have personally experienced.

Accuracy isn't the best with the Ruger 10/22 but you can easily find a new barrel to get the accuracy up there. As far as aftermarket products go, the 597 doesn't have nearly as many as the 10/22.

I just found this thread and personally I don't like semi autos 22's they have a tendency to jam or be picky about ammo I prefer a good lever action 22 they'll shoot anything you feed it and I can shoot every thing from shorts to long rifle out of it.

For me, the looks, size and feel of the Remington are superb, I have not actually fired one yet and I do own a 10/22 carbine that so far has been flawless and very accurate, it's proven (the Ruger) the Remington has a very bad rep. with its magazine and this to me turned me away from that rifle. They had a beautiful black 597 with bull barrel and a 3x9x40 scope on it at Dicks sporting goods for $249. I almost walked out with it, it was so nice and the price was right too. I had my heart on the Savage Mark II FV-SR and that's what I bought. Accu trigger, fluted bull barrel, threaded barrel for suppressor (if need be), it was the clear winner for me. But for your three choices I'd go for the Ruger hands down, why would you want to get a rifle with a history of troublesome mags? Why gamble and hope yours works good? Get the one that's proven. Or get what you want, you might be happy. Whatever you decide give us a report.
