I just sold a 10/22 and used the funds to buy a Remington as I needed a threaded barrel. It has an alloy magazine and has functioned well.
The downside is the lack of 25 round mags or any spare mags as I have yet to find any.

Msup - try keep shooting.com for Remington 597 mags. They sell a 10 round that is the same if not better than factory. I just got mine in a few weeks ago an so far they are just as reliable and seem of better quality.

Marlin/Glenfield 60, Stevens 987. Tube feed so no magazines to loose. Beretta Neos and a carbine kit to go with it, side arm and rifle in minutes.

I saw Ruger MX25 (the good ones) magazines at Gander Mountain a couple days ago. They are on the come-back I believe.....

While 25rds may do the job id rather hit them from across a field with one rd of 30.06 or mid to close range with 2 rds of 5.56 or 7.62x39 so yes 25 rds may get the job done but by that point all the other baddies know your position and any game in the vicinity is long gone. But if you still think a 22is a main carry gun instead of getting something a bit more useful the get a ruger 10/22 or a marlin model 60 both are good 22s

You've got to remember as well. If shtf, you could encounter vast hordes of desperate refugees wanting to take what's yours. I would want something that I could reload quickly and is made for SD. A .22 might work against a few people, but probably not a horde like you might see in WROL.

Just curious, what would you suggest?

Id suggest a three gun loadout starting with a long range gun 308 or higher, a mid range gun in 5.56/.223, 7.62x39, or .308 and a close in sidearm in a readily findable caliber. Also a shotgun wouldnt hurt. But if your looking for a single firearm id suggest a single mid range firearm in 5.56/223, 7.62x39 or 308

I would suggest pretty much any optics ready, hi-cap semi auto center fire in a military cartridge, namely .223 or 7.62. As a main gun. Make sure the gun suits your needs. If you can't carry a lot of weight, I wouldn't suggest a 10 + pound .308. I'm no expert, but this is my advise. There are plenty of writers and journalists who offer advice as well.

Marlin 60 right out of the box. There is no second choice!
