Thoughts on the Remington 597

Really diggin the Remington 597 .22 w/the bull barrel. Any comments/concerns?!

Great rifle. My son has a good 2000 rounds through his by now. Considered Marlin 795 as well, but at the time, it was hard to find. I was concerned that I'd turn the Ruger 10/22 into one project after another. The Remington 597 is a good out of the box rifle that I can say tons of good things about. I'll give you the shorter list of complaints.

Three complaints.
1. the front sight comes loose and the screw needs to be tightened every 500 rounds or so. Should be easy to fix.
2. the 30 round magazines are crap, just don't buy them, get several 10 rounders and you'll enjoy your range time
3. the stock scuffs easily

That is about all I could come up with for complaints about the 597.

Thanks a lot boss. Yeah I have been looking into that for my son (4)/me. I was interested in the bull barrel 597 ORC which would eradicate your concern 1. But I thank you much for the opinion sir. Charge hard.

My buddy bought one. 1st range session it stopped ejecting. Seems the extractor ejected w/ a spent case. He replaced the extractor and sold it. He bought a Marlin 60.

No kidding, seems a little ridiculous for that to happen. Thanks!

597 Remington

I do not care for the rifle.Too many problems with it . And the magazines are crap. I would buy a 60,10 22 or a 64 before I would even consider a 597.:) Cliff

Am a newbie with firearms. A 597 is my first rifle. Consider that trigger pull is really heavy so an hammer improvement is really needed. Either the commercial Volqartsen hammer or the Jard trigger update which is much more expensive (makes you wonder if it is really worth it on a <200$ gun).
Also consider changing the extractor to a Volqartsen one. So you have to consider the extra expenses too. Once that is done you have a pretty accurate rifle though.
Also stripping down the rifle for cleaning is a bit complicated... something you should do when you are not in a hurry ;)
Watch docv73 videos on youtube to see more on modding the 597.

I had no problems with the magazines (10 rounds). I have the metal ones with the '10' in a circle. Should be latest version with the magazine issues fixed.

Probably more defects can be found on older models. Mine was made in 2009.

Kind regards
