So I am thinking about getting a ruger 10 22. I know it is not the most accurate rifle out the box, so what I want to know is how much is it going to cost me to make it more accurate? or can I get a model above the basic that will be better out of box. I want to stay below or close to 300. Let me know if this can be done!

Out of the box accuracy in my opinion is the marlin 60 or 795.For the 10-22 to be as accurate change the barrel and trigger assembly.and that will cost you close to 350.00 bucks on top of the price of the 10-22. Buy the Marlin, just saying… .Cliff

The 10-22 is very accurate out of the box but the trigger sucks. Before you make a lot of expensive mods, fix the trigger. There are people on the site that can do the work reasonably or you can get a drop in trigger group from $110 to $250. Go for the cheaper options unless you intend to make it a full blown target rifle. The only other mod to start with is a Delrin (nylon) bolt stop pin to replace the steel one and they are cheap. The 10-22 with an ammo it likes is under 1/2" at 25 yards and I have seen 10 shot groups you could cover with a quarter and not see any holes at 50 yards.

I bought a marlin 60 and a Ruger 10/22 in the last month. I will say that the marlin is way more accurate. I love the capacity of the 25 round mags for the Ruger in which I can go and tear stuff up but if I had just one shot........ Marlin all the way.

The Target model is probably the most accurate 10/22 I would assume. I haven't shot all of them but they gave it that name for some reason.

When you start to make one more accurate the price can start fairly low and go to really high. It depends on how accurate you want it to be. The main components that will make about any rifle more accurate are a better barrel and a better trigger. If you swap those two things you'll notice a big jump in accuracy if you use good parts. I'd ask around to see exactly what parts have worked well for other people. I would guess you would be looking at maybe $300 worth of extra parts for any significant jump in accuracy but I've never built a 10/22. I just know what I've read. Some people will spend up to $800 or even more making their 10/22 exceptionally accurate. Just remember that mall ninja parts may look good but they don't increase your accuracy. You can make a Ruger shoot very accurate though. It just costs some money. And some rifles will shoot just as well for a lot less money. But they won't likely be semi-autos. There are one or two exceptions to that though. Thompson / Center did make a great shooting semi-auto but they were bought out by S&W. They now make one of the T/C designs but I don't know the name of it. You may run across a T/C if you look around. They haven't been gone that long. But you may just want a 10/22. If you do, go for it and don't let anyone talk you out of it. A lot of people are likely to tell you a Marlin 60 is more accurate than a lot of built 10/22's and they will be right. That doesn't mean you want one.
