I usually use a quarter stick of 40% PowerGel, and a #8 blasting cap. Noisy, true, but will lift the beaver about 10-12 ft out of the water..........

Try the CCI segmented, subsonic HP's. They're similar to the regular subsonic HP's except they're pre-segmented into 3 pieces & also copper washed, which is nice if you're shooting suppressed. They're devastating on small game, a head shot should take care of Mr. Beaver. They cycle in both of my 10/22's. They're also quite accurate in a 10/22 since they have a driving band which makes them fit the chamber better.

That's good info, I think I should try that out.

Why not use a 330 Conibear or a #3 coilspring trap on a drowning wire?

That seems probable, I'll check around at Bass Pro or Sportsman's Warehouse & see if I can find one.
