Default Semi-auto mag fed .22s

Been out shopping for a new semi-auto mag fed .22. These are what I ran into last night at 3 different retailers in the Peoria area. Wife said I can get one for Christmas for myself to replace my Win 290. Price needs to stay around $200.

Marlin 795-composite stock with cheap scope $99
Rem 597-base model green plastic stock $149
Mossberg 702 Plinkster-camo plastic stock $149
Savage 64-Wood stock w/scope-$189
Savage 64-black plastic stock with scope $139
Ruger 10/22-Wood stock $209

I recently bought a Savage Mark II bolt gun that I really like and the 64 with wood stock is the same gun. Don't know if I really want to get started down the Ruger 10/22 customization road. The Mossberg seems very light and not that well made. The 597 and 10/22 seem to have a large amount of high capacity mags readily available.

What do you all think? I'm leaning towards another Savage but the high capacity mags for plinking are tempting.

I'd buy the Marlin 795 for $99 all day long. But you can't go wrong with a 10/22.

You don't HAVE to customize a 10/22, but the option will always be there. On the flip side, should you ever accidentally damage a 10/22 there is an abundance of barely used factory barrels and stocks floating around out there should you need to replace one.

Also, the factory Ruger rotary magazines are extremely reliable and easily swapped in the gun. A range bag or jacket pocket will hold quite a few loaded magazines for those that don't want to go with a foot-long stick mag for the extra capacity.

the 10/22 is the largest selling 22lr rifle
5 million of these have been bought since first introduced in 1964
there are so many companies out there that have customized and upgrade components it is one to have for generations

No, the 1022 is NOT.

Marlin 60 - over 12 million as of this year, which is also it's 50th anniversary (1960-2010).

Marlin 795 has sold 3.5 million since it started in the 1990's...and has been catching up to the 1022 in a fast way

Come to think of it, the Marlin 70-P Papoose has done over 5 million itself...

I bought a used Papoose about 20 years ago because it had Leup 4x RF. Shot so well I got one in SS for my son. He liked it so much that he has not bothered buying any more .22's. Great rifles.

Well based on today's sale flyers, things might be firming up.

I can get

Marlin 795 w/scope after rebate for $95.
Savage 64 syn stock w/scope $139
Savage 64 wood stock w/scope $149
Remington 597 w/scope $169
Ruger 10/22 wood stock $185

I'm really leaning towards the Rem 597 due to the availability of the large capacity mags and the gun feels good. But at the $95 after rebate price on the 795, I don't see how I could go wrong with that gun.

The highest capacity mags I've seen for the Marlins is 15 rds. But they will be accurate rounds.
