There's debate on that. The general consensus is no. Some think that keeping the springs compressed will make them stay that way eventually. But, the modern thinking is that actual USE is what wears them out.

Mine stays empty just because I have no reason to keep it loaded. It's not a tactical rifle, and it's not my go-to self defense or home defense gun.

It is my all-around rifle I live in a bad naborhood we have had people try to break in to the house before

I did make the slick ammo pouch on the stock for easy access to loaded mags

Then you may want something a little bigger. I would suggest a pump action shotgun. It doesn't have to be anything tacticool. The cheapest one of a decent reputable brand, and chop the barrel off at 19" - 20" (just to keep from accidentally cutting it too short.)

You can find them for as little as $120 if you shop around.
