I'm sure you could. I've only been to one gun show so that's something I don't know much about. There's a lot of people on here that know way more than I do

Don't buy the compact. You will grow, but the rifle will not. I own a Deluxe Sporter so I am partial to that model. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You'll have to check them all out and decide what you like best. As far as upgrades the most cost effective are a competition hammer, bolt buffer, and optics. The only "flaw" with the Ruger 10/22 is the lousy trigger. The competition hammer fixes that. An inexpensive Simmons 22MAG scope is pretty decent too. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'd just buy the cheapest one you can find and practice with it. Then you can upgrade and customize it to your liking. There is an endless supply of parts and products to make it your own so I'd start out cheap and save my money to customize it the way I wanted it...

Just bought my 11 year old daughter a Ruger 10-22 semi auto. It's a tad long right now, but next year it probably won't be. First upgrade is a 25 round mag, sling, then a scope. I'll be honest, I didn't even consider a bolt action, it didn't occur to me it'd make her a better shot. I'm a long time fan of shooting, but this is the first gun I've owned in 13 years. And we'll start shooting it as soon as it quits raining.

I understand why many talk about a bolt action as a first gun. But I still think a Marlin 60 or a 10/22 are great choices in first guns.
