Default Ring suggestions

I have a Winchester 9422m built in 1974. Nice shape, but not a collector. I can't see the iron sights and need to put a scope on it to make it useful. I like to keep my guns looking as nice as possible and those grooves look like they can be damaged easily if you over tighten a poor fitting mount. Anyone have some experience(good or bad) that can steer me in the right direction or save me from disaster?

Mount is softer than the steel of the rifle. No harm, no foul.
What we have here is... failure- to communicate.
