Default Remington 597

Hi all, I recently got a Remington model 597 .22 rifle. I've been trying to sight in the iron sights till I get a scope but I'm having some issues with it. The stock moves around a little even though all the screws are tight so I'm not sure if that's the issue. It is a floating barrel but it seems to be a big gap. It won't hold any pattern at all, it shoots all over. Any ideas as to what it could be?

It could be countless things.
Try different ammo.
Try a different shooter (have someone else try it).
Look very closely at the muzzle to see if there is any damage.
Are you shooting from a steady rest?

I have used a couple different types of .22
Two different kinds of copper plated and one that wasn't. All the same story. There was a few of us shooting the gun trying to get it lined up, we were about to have a friendly competition lol. There isn't any damage that's obvious to me or anyone else. The stock just seems quite a ways from the barrel but everything is tight. We was shooting from a table off of a couple sandbags.

My 597 (before i sold it) was picky as hell with ammo. CCI mini mags and CCI stingers ran the best.

Dang.. I really like the looks and feel of the gun but it sounds like I better cut my losses and get something else. Any objections to that? Lol. I only have $100 in the gun.

I hated the 597 I owned. I never found out if it was accurate or not, I could never get through an entire mag without a malfunction.

I got a hundred bucks for it, about what I paid for it at Wal-Mart.

Is there anything that any of you would recommend I look for? Anything I should avoid?

A friend & I both bought 597's. Accuracy was OK but neither would get through 10 rounds without malfunctions - all kinds, including going full auto - 3 rounds with one trigger pull. We both actually got 100% refunds from Remington after I wrote letters.
