I have a REMINGTON 552 SPEEDMASTER RIFLE and I noticed that half way down the barrel there's a machined out circle indentation that I can see. But the gun shoots fine. Does anyone know what it is?

Vash- I'm puzzled-

just went and pulled my 552 out of the safe, and looked at owner's manual. No hava indentation halfway down barrel. By any chance are you referring to a ring shaped bulge around the barrel? If not, can you give us a photos? Where on barrel? Top, bottom, Left, Right?

It's inside the barrel about half way down. When you look down the muzzle of the barrel you can see it,but when you look down from the breach end you can't.

Does it look like this barrel? Raised ring all the way around the barrel? May be able to see it when sighting down exterior, feel with fingertips.

If so, that is damage caused by a squib load, not machining.

Bad cartridge (squib) low power, just enough to drive bullet into barrel, Next shot fired, bullet compresses air between new bullet and trapped bullet. Barrel steel bulges from pressure.

No way to fix other than replacing barrel. I have two like that- they still shoot OK, does lower the value.

Nice thompson c3. Id say its either bulged as c3 said or its a manufacturing ooops

Na, there's no bump. Maybe I'm just crazy and I'm seeing a reflection or something. I went out and shot it and its still very accurate.

Good- then go shoot it. Have a Speedmaster, Gamemaster, Scoremaster, Rangemaster, Targetmaster- and they are all a joy to shoot.

Marlin- yep- that were a squib load that bulged that one.

Thanks for the info.
