Default rem. model 597 vtr

I bought this gun for my son for xmas and I am not really familiar with the rimfire accessories. what would be the best scope set up for this gun? it has a picatinny base on it. any suggestions for a decent scope, afterall for a 22lr you can easily overkill the setup with a high powered scope. any input would be appreciated. thanks

Here is your best bet. Under $40.00.
Bushnell - .22 Rimfire

Be real careful of that gun, The extractor has a habit of tossing w/ a spent case.

This is his first rifle?

If so I would go with a cheapo scope for him to learn with. If this is not his first rifle and he is an experienced shooter then I would go up a few levels on the scope, maybe even let him pick it out.

She is safe, just make sure all the screws are tight!!! Then she will be reliable.

If the vtr has the same receiver/bolt system as the 597 autoloader, getting the guide rails and action springs back in can be awkward at best, and the springs can get bent out of shape. Hopefully they've made some improvements.

I've also had issues with the spring tension on the 597's 10-rnd mags and with missfeeds of Remington ammo. Not trying to be entirely negative, just a heads up.

Tasco also makes some good inexpensive scopes that would probably be compatible.

A great scope for $115.00 is the Mueller APV. It's a 4 X 14 X 40 AO scope. Bright and sharp to the edges at full power. It's one of the best scopes you can get for the money. You will have to spend at least twice as much to get better optics and it has a lifetime warrenty. Best 22 scope made for the money in my opinion and I've installed a lot of 22 scopes on customer guns over the years as a gunsmith. People always rave about the quality for the price.
Your son sounds as he's old enough and responsable enough to really use a decent scope. Cheap optics usually end up in the drawer due to dissapointment and you end up buying a better scope. Get a decent one to start off with.
