My specific question pertains to Stinger hyper velocity .22 Long Rifle ammo in use with a Ruger 10/22, can it be used?
My custom build has an E.R Shaw custom bull barrel on it with standard receiver and a few upgraded parts to the bolt. As a newbie to the sport I failed to read the fine (or not so fine) print on the box of CCI ammo I bought yesterday and now I don’t know if I can use it. Of course I can not return ammo from where I bought it, even unopened.
This Question came about because I remembered something in the 10/22 manual about not using stinger ammo in the stock model. Was it just about the barrel or is the reason deeper?

If any one could advise me on Stinger ammo I would appreciate it.

I have fired Stinger ammo in all of my 22 LR long guns, including half a dozen 10/22's. The Stinger case is about 1/10" longer than a standard 22 RF however the COAL is the same. If the Shaw barrel is a standard 22 RF chamber, not a tight "match" or Bentz chamber, it *should* be okay. You may want to check with Shaw on the chamber specs, but chances are if it's a Bentz cut chamber, the Stinger won't fit anyhow.

If you have a match grade chamber then NO you can not shoot Stingers in your gun. The Stinger is on the top end of the dimension spectrum, meaning that it is longer than a regular 22lr. That is information stright off their website.

If you have a stock 10/22 with factory barrel,you CAN shoot stingers out of it. The chamber is sloppy/loose enough that stingers will function just fine and are safe to use. Wether or not you WANT to is another matter. The stingers are loaded to faster velocity with a lighter(32gr)bullet. That means the standard rate of twist rifling (1-16) is going to be a tad fast for optimum accuracy in most rifles. Sometimes you can luck out and have a firearm that will like them. The previous poster is correct about the case being longer with same oal but they will function fine in any firearm with standard factory chamber. In fact-the case is basis for the .17hm2.

Thanks stalkingbear, The barrel I have on this custom is a E.R Shaw 18in. and from what I've been told the stinger rounds should work....how fine is yet to be seen.
