Are you sure they come with the key? Marlin told me it doesn't.

You should look into a set of drivers. I bought a set years ago and there is no screw it can't deal with. Most of the keys that come w/ scope bases, rings, etc are pure junk. A good set of drivers makes things simple.

My point is I already have a set. There is no reason for this hex key to be such an exact size. The common 1/8" would have worked just as well.

A set of Hex keys is not a driver set, not even close. I have 2 sets of Hex keys, one standard, one metric, but the are awkward at best when working on a firearm.
What you are complaining about is the same thing as when Savage changed from a hex bolt to a slotted screw on the back of their bolt. Big friggin deal. I like the Hex, but I usually look over a firearm and know what I'm getting into.

... Whatever. You're missing the point. They had a system that worked. For everyone. And then they ****ed with it. I didn't have a whole lot of time to go over the piece with a fine tooth comb. I bought it at the gun show was closing, and I had already done my research on the model 60 so I knew what to expect. Except the damn hex screws, which is something that has been changed only very recently.

It occurs to me that it would be really cool to drill the stock and insert a hex/allen wrench with a lil slot for the 90 degree section, maybe on top of the buttstock.

Like a slug slot on a shotgun? That would be handy. I'd probably prefer a storage compartment in the butt. Just to be safe.

I got the point. Your mistake for not looking it over. They change things just like every other manufacturer. Older ones are all steel, that changed in the 1990's to some plastic. Things change, they always will. I thing the safety on old Mausers is the perfect system, but no company uses it now. Oh well!
