Need help choosing .22 rifle

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a .22 rifle for my 12 year old son it will be used mainly at the range (indoors 25yds) for target practice. We stopped by Dicks sporting goods and they had quite a few. He held the Ruger 10/22 and the Remington 597 and immediately fell for the 597. The Ruger was priced at $238. and the 597 at $179 in OD with a scope included. I have searched through the forum and saw some good and bad posts in regards to the 597. Any advice and expertise will be truly appreciated thanks in advance!

I personally recommend the ruger 10/22...Great value, lasts forever, very easy to customize...But hey if likes the remington get that, I have never had anyproblems with my Dads remington 22 or any of my remington firearms.

Thanks! He really liked the feel of the 597 when he was checking it out and I think the scope is what sealed the deal for him. I hear that federal or CCI ammo is best when shooting the 597. I will post pics once we decide and purchase!

Henry! Good smooth action. Classic levergun. Accurate as well, even with bad eyes....

A remington 597 was my first rifle and I still have it today. Never had a problem with it except I've wore out a few magazines.

I would say if he likes it go for it. Should last him a lifetime! :)

The Henry Survival, next generation AR-7 clone, is youth sized, everything goes in the stock, so frees up safe space.

There was a .22 lr Remington 597 KABOOM recently in Australia...I don't think they've solved all the problems with the 597 yet...

I would suggest a Marlin 60 or Marlin 795, especiially the 795 as it's usually $129 and has a $25 REBATE going on until Dec 31st, 2010 :D

Yeah I've read some bad stories mainly from people using the wrong ammo! We picked up a 597 last night OD stock with a nice little scope on it! I will be hitting the range later and will be using some Federal ammo to see how that works! I will post results when we get back. Thanks for all the replies and advice!

Congrats. Those are pretty nice 22's. I had one back when I was young and cool:D If the vote as still out I'd of said go with the 10-22. But you got a good one. Can't wait to see the range report :)
