Model 60 .22 - will it shoot shorts?
Model 60 .22 - will it shoot, and cycle shorts?

My Marlin Model 60 would not cycle or .22 shorts as i recall. I don't specifically remember loading one singly to see if it would fire but not cycle; I ran the shorts in a single shot, bolt action & enjoyed popping squirrels with them.

No the Marlin/Glenfield model 60 won't cycle shorts. You CAN load them and shoot them as a single shot however. If you want a semiauto that will shoot .22 short, long, or long rifle interchangeably look at a Remington model 550-1/552.

No on shorts, but it does great w/ sub sonic .22lr which are just as quite. It will cycle them also.

will also manually feed the Aguila Super Colibri, which is awesomely quiet. It wont budge the bolt when fired.

Ive tried that 60 gr Aguila Super Sniper, but the twist is way wrong for them. 2 and 3" groups at 50 yards, while the Remington 36gr Sub Sonic prints a ragged hole, approx .25 to .3" spread.

As the others have said, the 60 won't shoot shorts. Mine won't shoot sub-sonic reliably either, about 30-40% of the time it will not eject with most sub-sonic ammo. It will cycle the Aguila SSS, but it was horribly inaccurate and would key-hole the target if it actually hit it.

I would suggest trying a box of the subs to see if yours can shoot it, Marlin semi-autos are sometimes real picky about what they will cycle and some will shoot nearly anything in 22 LR.

Very few semis designed for LR will cycle with shorts- just not enough energy. There were several Remingtons made to do just that- notably the 550 and 550-1 that the bear mentioned. THOSE have a "floating chamber". I have a couple of those that will cycle with CCI CB Longs.

THAT will get you some strange looks at the range- "Shh-click. TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP"- but no suppressor.

Winchester 290 will fire all 3, with great success.

Most of the older autos were chambered for S,L,LR and functioned well with all three. The problem I think was if enough shorts are fired it builds up a carbon ring at the case mouth making the LR cases difficult to extract. For whatever reason most manufacturers changed the actions enough so that shorts wont feed.

Sadly the semiautos that can handle shorts are no longer made.

Get yourself a Henry lever-action and shoot ANYTHING in the short, long and longrifle ammo range!

Like a good golfer with his bag of clubs, a gunowner should not have just one .22 rifle! :D
