I Am Looking To Add A 22lr Self Loader To My Collection And Have Narrowed The List Down To The Marlin 60sb Or A Ruger 10/22. Now Excluding The After Market Buildup Factor, Which Would You Prefer? It Appears The Marlin Gives You More For Less With Its 14 Rd Capacity And Last Shot Bolt Hold Open. This Addition Is To Be Used For Plinking And Target Shooting.

But in my limited experience, the 10/22 is much more reliable. And there are literally hundreds of parts and modifications you can get for the 10/22 if you are so inclined.

Have to say, the 10/22 was the best money I ever spent on a .22 rifle.

I have an old Marlin M-60 and two 10-22's. The 10-22 is far superior for longevity and the ability to accessorize. The Marlin is a good gun for the money, just not as "cool".

Ruger all the way. Years ago I worked at a gun shop as a second job.I'm going back 25 years ago. I saw allot of problems with the Marlin/ Glenfield Model 60's.We had a indoor range and we saw all kinds of handguns and 22 rifles.I would say it would be a fair statement to say the Marlin's had the most issues.Allot could have been from not being maintained. Now if they've improved since then I don't know.I don't think you can go wrong with a 10/22.

I have had my Marlin mod 60 for over 20 years and the only problem I have with it now is finding time to shoot it

I've owned 3 of the Ruger 10/22's in my day and sold two of them that I wish I hadn't. My current one is a treat to shoot and I never have had any problems with it. Makes a great training gun for the young ones and people who have never shot before.

I own both guns and they've both been very good. I spent only $139 for my Ruger new about 5 years ago and I must say, I couldn't imagine parting with it. IMO, the Ruger feels like a much better gun than it's bargain basement price would indicate. Plus, you get the reliable feeding of the rotary magazine.

AsS much as I love Marlins, I do not like the Model 60- aka the Gunsmith's Nightmare. For a lever, get a Marlin 39A. For an auto, get the Ruger. However, I would point out that there are others- I buy (and shoot the heck out of) older Mossberg 22 rifles. The 152 Series is a neat little carbine with a fold-down foregrip. The 51/ 151 series is a tube-mag-in-the-stock tackdriver of a rifle- and the price on Mossys seems to be less than the Winchesters- fewer Mossberg collectors. I also shoot a couple of older Remington 550s- they will cycle with shorts, longs, long rifles, or CCI CB Longs- and I can roll a soda can at 100 meters with them.
