Default Marlin Model 795 vs Savage 64FXP

I am reading all these post about how fun a 22LR rifle is and wanted a cheap plinker. It came down to Marlin Model 795 and Savage 64FXP and both are priced $129.99

Which is a better? Or did I miss a better choice?

BTW, I am not planning on modifying this (reason I didn't go to Ruger 10/22) and want one that I will use out of the box.

Thanks!

Judging from the response this poll got...I probably shouldn't buy any of these two.

I have a savage 64 and it has seen a couple thousand rounds so far. I have only had a couple jams, no real complaints. It is what it is, an inexpensive way to get trigger time. Accuracy is pretty good, only thing I do not like is the mag release and the take-down procedure requires a few tools. The 795 is used by some people at the project Appleseed shoots, I have been thinking about picking one up and turning it into a liberty training rifle.

Sometimes these posts take some time to get moving.

Right now, and continuing to the end of the year, Marlin is offering a $25 rebate on the 795. If you're looking for a cheap 22lr, the Mossberg 702 Plinkster is usually priced about the same as the Marlin and Savage and maybe a little cheaper some places. A friend had the Plinkster for a while and it was a good rifle, nothing much to look at, but it was accurate and it never gave him any trouble. I prefer the Model 60 Marlin, but it's a little higher than the others.

I don't know much about that particular Savage rifle, but my 110 in 270 has been fine.

I can't really speak much on comparison of these particular two firearms, because I don't have a Savage 64FXP, but I LOVE my Marlin 795. It is very reliable, and not really as picky about ammo as most semi-.22s (much less picky than my 10/22). I have had success with bulk Federal and American Eagle, CCI Mini-Mags, some older Remington High Velocity, and Blazer. It is also awesomely accurate, right out of the box. I don't think you can go wrong with the Marlin.

I decided to get the Marlin 795. It was $140 OTD at Academys but will be getting a $25.00 rebate.

Father-in-law are visiting over spring break and we had a blast at the range yesterday. He loved shooting the Marlin...I only wish we had extra mags for it. He is asking me now when we will go back LOL. Of course my wife is encouraging me to take him again.

Mounted the cheap Barska 3-9x32 scope that I bought for it and at $38.99 (free shipping), it looks like a good deal.
