Almost forgot, the years to avoid are 2005-2011...worst Marlins ever due to disgruntled workers...
and 2010/2011 due to new mfr'ing lines and new workers were a bit spotty in QC...

Subtract 100 from the first two numbers to get the date from any Marlin made after 1973
So a 2005 would be an 95, and a 2011 would be an 89, anything including/in between those,
inspect VERY carefully before purchase!!
For a 60 or 795 from 2005-2011, you look for off-spec accessory rail (scope rail), rough bolt (polish out),
bad inletting, and any other oddities you would normally look for when buying a gun from an unknown source...
I treat all firearms as suspect, as I'm a bit OCD, so I go over 'em like a White-Glove Armourer's Inspection anyway

Its a good habit to get into!!
I've owned a 2005 Marlin 60, it had the rail issue and the bolt needed polishing...but wasn't as precise as my other Marlins,
so it got traded off...my 2010 Marlin 795 also had the rail issue and a rough bolt, so filing/polishing was in order...
Bearing in mind these are $150 or less rifles, a little work by the End-User is expected for the best results...
Basically what you've got in a cheap Marlin is an Olympic Barrel without the benefits of the extra hand-fitting & bedding...
so for about 8 hours of your time (2 hours after you get used to fixing 'em), they can look as good as they shoot
The 3/8 accessory rail issue has been solved since Dec 2011, so all 2012 60/795's are good on that issue,
along with having better work done on the bolts & inletting...new MFR'ing lines take time to get squared away...
if you measure the rail with a Micrometer, you should get a .43 measurement...if .44-47, its out of spec...
the good news is it is a fast fix, you take a triangle file, put electric tape on one side and file the rail on each side until .43,
the tape on the bottom of the file prevents scratching up the reciever finish...kinda important
The best 2010/2011 was the 60 DLX/60 DL anniversary models, they got QC'd to heck & back due to being a special edition

The DLX was about a step above the DL as well...very nicely done!!!
